Tattoo Aftercare

Congratulations on your new tattoo. Its equally important to take care of the tattoo after its applied. All tattoos require to be protected from sunlight, not-soaked in water, touched, scratched at or picked. Avoid swimming, hot tubs, bathtubs, or tanning for 3 to 4 weeks from application.

There is more than one way to heal or bandage a tattoo, always follow your artist’s instructions. Here are two common practices for bandaging and healing a tattoo.

Wrapped Healing

Your tattoo is wrapped in an adhesive breathable bandage. Leave this bandage on for 24 to 72 hours or longer. Remove bandage in the shower, washing at the edges with non scented antibacterial soap. Gently washing the tattoo, pat dry, and let air dry completely. Then apply a small amount of a fragrance free, dry skin lotion (i.e.Aquaphor, Lubriderm). Reapply the lotion up to three times a day, and always wash your hands before touching your tattoo.

Non Wrapped Healing

The Tattoo will be covered in non-adhesive wrap or padding. Leave the bandage on until home and in a clean safe environment. Unwrap, and wash the tattoo thoroughly with non-scented antibacterial soap (i.e. dial antibacterial soap), pat dry, and let air dry completely. Apply a very thin layer of A & D ointment or Aquaphor. Repeat this process 2 to 3 times a day for the first 72 hours. Once the tattoo starts to peel, switch to a fragrance free, dry skin lotion.

Piercing Aftercare

Ear, face, body piercings

  • Wash your hands before handling your piercing
  • Spray piercing front and back with ONLY sterile saline twice a day (morning and night) no more than 4x daily. Do not whip. Let air dry.
  • Try not to get anything on your piercing throughout the day other than the sterile saline.
  • Do not submerge piercing in water.
  • Avoid touching or moving piercing around.
  • Do not sleep on fresh piercing.
  • Piercing may bleed or swell within the first week or 2. Some ibuprofen may help the swelling.
  • If piercing swells too much and jewelry is sinking into your skin then make a visit to the shop to try longer jewelry.
  • Piericng may have off white or yellow ‘crusties’ avoid picking them. Saline with clean off crusties that are ready to come off.
  • If bumped, pulled, or slept on piercing may begin to form small irritation bump. To help clear that up treat piercing like it is brand new and try your best to avoid irritating it further.
  • Expect a MINIMUM of 8 weeks healing. A lot of people will take a bit longer to heal so be patient. Some piercings will take up to 6 months to fully heal.
